Highest Reward Checking Rate in the Nation at Gibsland Bank & Trust in Louisiana

POSTED ON BY

Gibsland Bank & Trust Company

Louisiana residents have many good choices for high-yield reward checking accounts. Some of the highest rates are available at Louisiana banks. One that I haven’t yet covered is at Gibsland Bank & Trust. It’s called GBT Hometown Rewards Checking. The bank also offers a linked savings account called GBT Hometown REALSaver. The following is a summary of the rates and features of these two accounts as of 7/9/2013:

GBT Hometown Rewards Checking rates and features if monthly requirements are met:

  • 4.11% APY on balances up to $15,000
  • 0.51% APY on amount of balance over $15,000
  • 0.15% APY on months requirements aren't met
  • Nationwide ATM fee refunds

REALSaver rates and features if monthly requirements are met:

  • 1.51% APY on balances up to $25,000
  • 0.51% APY on amount of balance over $25,000
  • 0.15% APY on months requirements aren't met

Monthly requirements:

  • 15 debit card purchases
  • 1 direct deposit or recurring ACH payment
  • E-Statements

Both accounts are free with no monthly service fee and no minimum balance requirements. The checking account requires a minimum initial deposit of $100. The savings account requires a minimum initial deposit of $1.

Both the Rewards Checking and REALSaver pages have an “apply now” link that allows customers to open the accounts online. However, both pages state that a branch visit to one of the bank’s branches is necessary to complete the application process.

Gibsland Bank & Trust branches are located in northwest Louisiana in the cities of Shreveport, Gibsland, Minden, Athens, Arcadia, Sibley, Bossier City and Homer.

The bank has an overall health score at DepositAccounts.com of 3 stars (out of 5) with a Texas ratio of 29.64% (average) based on March 2013 data. Please refer to our financial overview of Gibsland Bank & Trust for more details. The bank has been a FDIC member since 1948 (FDIC Certificate # 16689).

How This Reward Checking Account Compares

This reward checking rate is currently the highest in the nation for balance caps of at least $15K. The next highest rate is 4.00% APY at Southwest Airlines Federal Credit Union and at Home Federal Bank in Louisiana. However, both of these have higher balance caps. The balance cap at Southwest Airlines FCU is $25K. At Home Federal Bank it’s $20K. Due to this higher cap, Louisiana residents may want to go with Home Federal Bank instead of Gibsland Bank & Trust.

The highest reward checking rate for balances up to $15K that’s available nationwide is 3.00% APY at INOVA Federal Credit Union and at Lake Michigan Credit Union.

The above rates are accurate as of 7/9/2013.

To find reward checking accounts in other areas of the nation, please refer to the reward checking section of DepositAccounts.com. To learn more about reward checking, please refer to this reward checking overview.

Thanks, Ken.

$15K limit is a bit low, but tolerable, especially if multiple RCAs are allowed.

The branch visit requirement to complete the application basically kills the deal for most of us.

Nevetheless, it is good to know that there are more 4% RCA club members (with decent limit) around.
