IRA specials are common this time of year as banks and credit unions try to attract new customers. This time of year before April 15th, you can make IRA contributions for both the current year and the previous year. I came across a credit union with a nice IRA CD promotion. It’s Greater Nevada Credit Union, and it has three special IRA certificates with very competitive rates: 2.20% APY 37-month, 1.70% APY 27-month and 1.20% APY 17-month. Minimum deposit is $1,000. These rates are listed in the credit union’s rates page as of 2/25/2014.
Greater Nevada Credit Union has long been offering a reward checking account. I first reported on it in 2008. The account is now called Aspire Checking and it pays 2.50% APY on balances up to $10K (as of 2/25/2014) if certain monthly requirements are met.
Credit union membership is open to those who live or work in northern Nevada. Please refer to the credit union's "join" page for the full details. Membership requires a $5 fee and a minimum deposit of $25 into your share savings account. You can join and open accounts using an online application.
