Unlimited additional deposits (in any amount) are allowed throughout the term, with no restrictions on the maximum aggregate balance. In some instances, add-on CDs have a pre-set maximum deposit amount or limit the total add-on deposits to no more than the initial principal. The 44-month CD could be very useful as a hedge against falling rates, as it only requires a $1k opening deposit. If you open the 44-month CD now and should rates drop in the next couple of years, adding deposits to this CD with a 3.05% APY could be a better option than any new CD available.

According to CSR, the Early Withdrawal Penalty is as follows:

  • Terms up to 11 months – 3 months interest
  • Terms of 12-24 months – 6 months interest
  • Terms of 25+ months – 9 months interest

How the Add-On CDs Compares

When compared to the similar length-of-term CDs tracked by that are available within the FOM, Fairwinds Credit Union's Add-On CD APYs aren’t that impressive. The intrinsic value of these CDs is the unlimited additional deposits. Add-on CDs are not that common, making an apt comparison difficult. There are a few nationally available add-on CDs offered by Mountain America Credit Union (known as Term Deposit Plus), but they are limited by a $100k balance cap.

Top 5-Year CD Rates at Fairwinds Credit Union in Central Florida

In the last couple of years I've seen more credit unions offering relationship certificate rates. These are higher CD rates if the member has certain relationships with the credit union or has accumulated a certain number of points for those relationships. Often the relationship is an active checking account, credit card or loan. For those who just want to open a CD and forget about it, these relationship requirements can be a deal killer. However, for those willing to put in some work, there can be a nice payoff with...

5.76% APY 9-Month CD at a Florida CU (Fairwinds)
Fairwinds Credit Union has changed its 9-month promotional certificate that I reported on last month. A new member can now receive 5.76% APY by opening a checking account with direct deposit. The checking with direct deposit earns the member 2,500 relationship points that can be immediately redeemed for the 5.76% APY. There are other ways to earn relationship points for existing members. Please refer to the credit union's relationship reward page. One downside of this change is that members with 5,000 relationship points can no longer apply these points for...
