The offer is not available to existing checking customers, a limitation I didn't find clear from this post. In other words, an existing checking customer can't open up an additional checking account at Fifth Third Bank and take advantage of this attractive offer (especially good for those with a military connection)l.

Which is probably why the text reads, "Available only for new checking account customers."

Carpline and others voting for Carpline's comment: Look again. Re existing customers, the post comment has the following statement purporting to define existing customers (emphasis supplied): '...DEFINED as those who have not closed a Fifth Third checking account in the past 12 months." Reading Fifth Third's website clarified this statement, the post comment requires clarification and Carpline's comment misses the point.

I opened my account with a modest deposit. Now there is no way to add a large amount of additional funds.
They currently have no way to take deposits, other than the $30K a month limit through their ACH service.

This is my take:
The online short cut takes you to cash edge not, that is not disclosed by anyone, you think you are dealing with a real bank. After entering all the personal info, you still think you are at and I created user ID and password and you get a thank you e-mail addressed as is coming from with only the last 4 digit of your new account number. Furthermore, you want to deposit $100 as opening amount and enter your local bank ABA and account number. You get note to come back and verify the 2 small deposits.
Four days later I try to log at thinking the online banking can be accessed with the user and password created during opening the account, no such luck. I called a CSR at and she asked me for the account number I said, I only have the last for digits, she said, give me you SS# and the reply was, we do not have any record of such account nor you exist in our system.
I called cash edge, a CSR said you have to log in our server with the user and password you created thinking is for online banking for
I logged in at a web site I never heard off and was asking me for the 2 small deposits at my local bank, there were no small deposits in the first 4 days, on the fifth day a shows up in my bank, I hurried to give that info to cash edge to initiate, this time the $100 withdrawal.
The money were taken out in another 3 business days.
Thinking the account is now opened at, I called and ask for online registration. A CSR said we can not do that, you need a debit card for that account to arrive and to activated first.
Ten business days past and the card arrived, somehow you have to create user ID with the 16 digit debit card and as password to use the self created pin, after that (..are you still with me?..." you have to created a new user ID and password to officially log in.
I logged in and the balance is $0.00 and the account number is the last 4 digits only, thinking when the balance shows up as available, they will include the full account number.
One more week passes and the balance is $100 now but the account# is only partial.
I called again, 40 minutes on call, a CSR answers and she said: " You have to drive to our branch (50 miles away) or wait for the monthly statement to arrive in about 30 days.
It has been over 2 months now and I have not been able to set the direct deposits to qualify for the bonus, I still do not know my account number and no ACH can be set from outside.
Coincidence or done on purpose, guess for yourself, I called them today to close the account they want early closing fees, I told them to do it.
P.S. this is not web site, please be careful.
