I wanted to elevate the comment from JIMKARL as it is important for those considering a CD from Hyperion. I wish I had asked the questions he did instead of relying on DA summary of the CD special back in 2023.
"Only a couple notes for people who might have an opportunity down the road is one for their CDs you can't ACH transfer for Redemption. you have to either wire transfer redemptions or move to one of their savings accounts from there you can ACH. The account set up is very lengthy, much more so than most banks. It took a good 20 to 25 minutes to get through all the forms and questions Etc. They really need to streamline that process."
It is now time to redeem a CD and this what they tell me "As far as getting the funds out we can send you a cashier's check or we can have you complete a wire transfer agreement to have the funds transferred to an external account. We cannot set up an ACH." I had not set up a savings account due to low rates.
Keep away from Hyperion Bank: They are thieves.
When I opened two certificate of deposit accounts with Hyperion in recent years, they transferred the funds, with my authorization, by ACH transfer from my checking account. This show that they have the capacity to transfer funds by this method. When the CD's matured, they refused to return the funds by ACH. The choice was a wire transfer with a $25 fee, or return by paper check. Since I did not want to pay the wire transfer fee, I chose the paper check.
The certificate matured on April 4. The paper check was not even issued until April 8, four days after the maturity date. I received the check late in the afternoon two days later, April 10. Thus, the earliest that the money could have been withdrawn from Hyperion was April 11, one week after the maturity date. Given the lateness of my receipt and subsequent deposit on Thursday evening, it probably was not withdrawn from Hyperion until April 14, after the weekend, or ten days later.
This means that Hyperion had interest-free use of the money for at least seven days, and perhaps ten days. At current interest rates, this cost me at least $23 in interest, almost as much as the fee for wire transfer. This effectively reduced the stated APY of the CD by at least 8.6 basis points.
I have invested in certificate of deposit accounts for years, opening accounts with at least thirty banks, looking for high yields. Out of all those other banks, only two did not return the closed account funds by ACH transfer. And of those two, one, Cross River Bank, provided a free wire transfer.
This bank deliberately delays return of CD redemptions to rip off their depositors. If you deposit with them, they will cheat you.
