I currently bank with Portland Federal Credit Union and they are a bank that truly cares about their customers. One time when I had a question about my account being over drafted they not only explained why it happened but also made sure that I knew exactly what that meant. The worker I was chatting with explained it in real people terms rather than banker talk. Not only did she explain the problem to me buy she also offered to reverse the transaction for a one time complimentary fix. This was I was not charged the overdraft fee. Another time they proved to be the best bank was when my debit card was damaged they at no charge sent me a new one to replace it and they also sent it to me rush status so that i wouldn't have to wait a long time to get my new card.
Portland Federal Credit Union is a banking service in Mid Michigan that is 100% about customer satisfaction. They have friendly staff and they are always happy to help you with a warm smile. They strongly value community as well and participate in several local events. PFCU also throws events for its customers including grilling hot dogs in the summer. I think this is really important because it shows PFCU really cares about its bankers. PFCU is slowly becoming part of the mobile world - they recently added online check deposit which is a great feature to their mobile app and very convenient. I would recommend PFCU as a bank of choice if you are living in the Mid Michigan area!
PFCU has been great to work with. They have low fees, and I especially like their instant messenger option online. Whenever I have a quick questions, I log on there, and it gets answered within minutes. I do most of my online banking at work, which is easy to do since I'm on a computer the whole time. However, it's not as easy to step away to make a personal call when I have a question or need an action taken. I can log onto their instant messenger option, and talk to a real, local person immediately and get my need taken care of. I have probably used this a dozen times in the past year and have never needed more than 5 minutes to get my question answered or my need taken care of. An example of this was during my recent move. I needed to update my address information, which would normally result in a visit or phone call. I logged onto IM, told the agent I moved and what my new address was and she made all the updates on her end that needed to be made, and I was good to go!
In my experiences with Portland Federal Credit Union, they have always been wonderful to work with. I opened an account when I got married and have met with a rep several times over the course of the last 5 years and they have all been pleasant experiences. We have opened up checking and savings accounts, certificates of deposit, a credit card, and now our kids have their own specialty designed savings accounts that rewards them for depositing money.
Their rates of in line with other banks. Recently I bought a house and shopped around for a mortgage, while their was low, I was able to finder lower rates with other organizations. They were very open with their rates and understand when I had to take my business else where.
If you're just starting out as an adult, like I was, I would recommend PFCU because of their knowledgeable staff and their willingness to help, even if it won't benefit them in the long run (like they did with my mortgage).
I brought my child in to start a savings account. After reviews of several banking institutions, I decided that PFCU's incentives for a child's savings account was a good fit for my child. I sat down with my excited child and a banking associate at PFCU to set up the account. They collected the typical data and photocopied my ID.
Later on that afternoon I received a credit alert that someone pulled a hard inquiry on my credit report. Upon further review, I found out that PFCU ran a hard inquiry on my credit for setting up a bank account for my minor child. As anyone with minimal knowledge of credit reporting knows, a hard credit inquiry lowers your credit score. At no point in the process was I informed by PFCU's associate that I would have a credit inquiry performed for opening a savings account for my child. This practice is deceitful and unethical.
I want to encourage anyone who is assiduous about their credit score to think twice about this sneaky practice that I had to deal with at Portland Federal Credit Union.
