New $200 Citibank Checking Account Bonus

Citibank has a new promotion for opening its EZ Checking account. It's very similar to the past $200 promo except for two differences: 1) no initial deposit is not required rather than the $1,500 required with the old promo and 2) you must have a Citibank credit card. Like before, it's only for first-time Citibank checking account customers. The bonus requires the following:
  • Open a Citibank checking account by 8/31/07
  • Within the first calendar month after the account is opened, make a direct deposit or make two online bill payments
  • $100 will be credited to your checking account within 120 days of your initial direct deposit or the first two bill payments
  • If you qualify to earn the initial $100 and continue to make direct deposits or two bill payments per month for the next 6 consecutive months, you'll be eligible to earn an additional $100.

Like the last $200 promo, there's no Citibank webpage for this promo. Credit for finding out about this goes to this SlickDeals thread. You must call the Citibank number 1-866-422-0592 and mention the code MVS2 to apply. I just called this number and confirmed the above details. I was told that you could only apply for this offer by phone. You have the option to fund the account over the phone with an ACH transfer or by check after they send you the account opening package in the mail. Note that they do a hard credit inquiry in the application (which will slightly ding your credit score).

Beware that many readers have reported problems with previous Citibank promotions (see comments from post). I did successfully get the first $100 from the old $200 promo (post), and hopefully I'll soon get the second $100.

To avoid monthly fees on the EZ Checking you need either a combined average balance of $1,500, or use direct deposit or make two monthly online bill payments. Please refer to this Citibank page for more EZ Checking account details.

You can also get a $100 bonus for Citibank's Ultimate Savings Account (see post). However, I don't think you can do both the checking and savings account bonuses together.

I signed up for this last night over the phone. Pretty straightforward, no hitches so far. I already have a savings account (opened for the $100 deal mentioned) and a Citi Driver's Edge card arrived just yesterday also. Hopefully the rest of the process to get the $200 works fine.

Alex, thanks for the info. No problems that you were already a savings account customer? I had forgotten to ask about that when I called. Please keep us posted when the bonuses are credited.

For those who were able to sign up, please let me know if Citibank calls you to say you're not eligible. As was mentioned on the May 31st comment, someone in the SD thread reported this happening. Perhaps people here will have better luck.

They do do a hard credit pull if you sign up for their CreditPlus service, which is free and provides overdraft protection. They don't tell you that when they ask if you want CreditPlus, but I found out later in the conversation, and he wouldn't let me go back. Oh well, it's probably good to have anyways. If you don't sign up for CreditPlus, they do a soft credit pull.

I signed up on the old $200 checking account bonus back in March and still haven't received my bonus. Customer service is horrible and the say they have never heard of the promotion codes that have been used. Beware of Citibank. Their customer service rating is amongst the worst of any service connected companies.
