$250 Promotion for a Bank of America Credit Card

[Update 7/25/07: The new promo seems to have also ended.]
[Update 7/19/07: There seems to be a new promo page here with a new promo code: FABHTM.]
[Update 7/14/07: Promotion seems to have ended.]

There's a promotion going on for a Bank of America Alumni MasterCard Credit Card. It offers 25,000 reward points that can be redeemed for $250 cash. The only requirement is spending $250 on the card. Here's the promotional page link. Click on either card, and the 25K point offer will appear. This has been a hot thread at both FatWallet and SlickDeals. It appears the only Alumni card that has this promotion is the University of Iowa Card, but being a student or alumni of the university isn't required. In addition to applying online, you can also apply by phone at 1-800-932-2775. Make sure to mention the priority code FABHPD. The credit card has no annual fee.

Note that the promotional page is at applyonlinenow.com instead of BankofAmerica.com. This seems to be a standard credit card application site used by Bank of America. If you click on the apply-now button at this Bank of America credit card page it'll take you to a similar applyonlinenow.com webpage.

If you sign up for this offer, you may also want to consider taking advantage of a $100 checking account bonus at Bank of America. It's only for BoA credit card customers. Please see this post for more info. This bonus appears to still be available. Several readers have reported receiving the $100, but as usual, you'll have to watch out for monthly fees. For more Bank of America promotions, please see this post.

I signed up for this deal yesterday after seeing it over at FW. Signup was painless and the vast majority of applicants are approved. I went for the Tiger Hawks card, even though I am a Nitany Lions fan. I thank God I won't have to carry an OSU Buckeyes card. Not sure it would be worth $250 to do that. But a Tiger Hawks card I can tolerate, at least for a short while, long enough to garner my $250 booty. This is the best one of these deals in which I have participated. My next best was a $100 prize, so this deal is 2.5 time better. I can use the money.

I just signed up for this deal and made my parents and grandfather do the same. The shopkeeps in the Pinehurst, NC area are going to rather confused at the recent influx of Hawkeye-bearing credit cards being run through their scanners.

Hmmm, I got a response that an instant decision could not be made and that they'll let me know within 30 days. I have perfect credit, but perhaps I have to much credit available since I take advantage of these offers quite a bit. I have over $100,000 available because of all the reward offers that I respond to - time to start closing out a bunch of them.

Re the $100 add-on reward Banking Guy mentioned, in connection with opening a checking account: It goes state by state. But for me, as of this morning, it appears there exists no direct deposit requirement. Oh happy day!

I signed up and received instant approval over the internet. We shall see how easy (or not) it is to get my $250. Thank you banking guy.

I applied and was instantly approved today. There are two priority codes (depending on the card selected): FABHPD and FABHTN (Tiger card). There is a 7-10 day wait period to receive the "welcome package" and card. Also, there is a 15 month, 0% BT. I have not received an email confirming application. I called to confirm the application and approval.
Anonymous   |     |   Comment #7
0% on the BT but a 3% transaction fee with no max so be careful.

I applied by phone, have excellent credit and also have checking & savings accounts with BA. Was told that app was not approved. I take advantage of card deals often and have about $25K outstanding on 0% cards. Perhaps that is a problem.

Just took a look at this, and received this message when clicking on the card:

"The application you requested
is currently unavailable.

Your business is important to us.

Please call us at one of the following numbers and we will
be happy to process your request immediately: ..."

I wonder if they are starting to actually check to see if you are an alumni!?

Bank of America may have pulled this deal. I tried going to:

and then clicked the Alumni/Student card link. There is no credit card being offered for the University of Iowa. There are offers for other universities though. All good deals must come to an end. I guess I wasn't fast enough on this one!

Yes, the offer doesn't seem to show up on the website anymore.

Some on the FW thread have mentioned that you still may be able to apply via the phone. They also have a scanned pdf of the promo page so you can keep for evidence.

I called by phone to see if I can still get this offer. They said I still could get an Alumni card. I asked if it came with a $250 bonus. The service rep said "No, there is a $20 cash bonus on this card now." So much for the $250 offer.

Thanks for calling and leaving a comment. I've update the post with this info. Hopefully, those who got in will receive the points as promised.

I would like to update my previous post in which the CSR from the online application center told me that the U. of Iowa credit card cash bonus is now only $20. I really hated to miss out on this deal so I called Bank of America directly (bypassing their online application center). The CSR with whom I spoke with said that the $250 dollars is still available. In a nut shell I told him that I had a hard time believing him since I was told the offer was no longer valid. He put me on hold, checked with the promotional department, and was able to pull up the promotional page in their system showing it was still valid (as of Saturday, July 15, 2007). I had him guarantee to me that I would get the $250 bonus, got his name, notated the time and date of the call, and then applied. He told me their instant approval system was not working and that I would know the results in 7 to 10 business days. I will make another post in a couple of weeks to let you know if B/A gave me the $250 bonus.

This offer is dead! I called and they couldn't bring it up. I wouldn't trust bank of america with their word. They stiffed me out of two bonuses and I've got names tel. numbers and even in writing! I'll have to sue them to get the bonuses. They're crooks!
Anonymous   |     |   Comment #16
CAPMAN, if possible, please say how the stiffed you out of two bonuses. I've never been stiffed out of a bonus, but I hear that it does happen. I too have the BOA card, and I hope I'm not wasting my time.

I applied on July 11, 2007 and was "instantly approved" online. As of today, August 2, I have not received my card or any other mail from BofA. Has anyone received their card after they applied for this deal and were "instantly approved"???

Follow up to my own question. I called today and was informed that they have me on record, and their records show 25000 reward points to be provided, but, that the card "has not arrived at their company yet" and I should try back in a week if I don't receive it. Maybe their manufacturer is behind? Sounds questionable. It has been 3 weeks now since I applied.

I have not received my card either. I wasn't instantly approved, but a week later I called for a status, and they told my I was in fact approved. I have a feeling we will eventually get our cards and our bonuses, but we'll have to keep on top of this. It's a little work, but it ain't for nothing

I just received my card in the mail today after going through a phone application on July 13th. I'll post back as to whether or not I receive the bonus.

Bad news, I got the card (Aug 4), called to activate, and they said that they don't show this offer as being part of the account. I told her that I had everything in writing, and every page was printed during the application process. She said that she would forward the issue to their rewards center, and they'll "decide whether or not to honor the offer." What recourse do we have if they don't honor this?

does anyone have an archive of the page showing the offer? I failed to copy the information down when I applied and I got my card and would like evidence to support my case if the $250 doesn't show up.

I have a copy. All of us concerned should stay in touch and follow up if Bank of America doesn't honor this.

Dear Perk Getter
Could you please send me a copy of $250 bonus page? My email temp_inbox at hotmail. I received a card today, but after call, CRP said there is no such a promotion.

Thanks in advance.
Anonymous   |     |   Comment #25
Perk getter, any chance you could send me a copy at the same time? I am at bankbloglover@yahoo.com I would appreciate it. If possible, I thank you in advance. Mike

Let's all just wait to see what happens before I start scanning copies of the original offer and emailing them out to people. I'm happy to assist if needed, but let's give BOA a chance first. We have over-reacted for now. There is a discussion about this at https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=11103840&postID=4438246770475222394 where everyone is encouraged to calm down. I know that this is a tedious process, but I can honestly say that I've never NOT gotten my bonus for something like this. I may have had to call several times AND wait out the time period - this one is 12 weeks after you make the $250 purchase, but in the end, we will eventually get this.

just got letter in the mail today from bofa stating "As a bonus, you have qualified for 25,000 points redeemable at iowarewards.com, which will be applied to your account in 1-2 billing cycles." So good news is it looks like they are honoring the deal. Bad news is that I'm not sure if you're limited to the stuff on iowarewards.com which only includes iowa stuff. we'll see once the bonus points hit my account.
