I Had Stopped Asking My Local Credit Union If They Would Match A CD Rate.

I had to split a Roth for insurance purposes. When this site said that you could withdraw with no penalty from the credit union that it is in if you are over 591/2. I started looking for a good long term rate that was not brokered.

I chose one and started the process for it and my printer would not scan the personal info that the credit union needed in my new computer, so I copied the info and went to my credit union in town to ask if they would fax it for me.

First they asked about what it was for and I told them and then because of and because of my age and the amount they started to ask questions asking where did you find this rate. I said the internet. Well that was the trigger. They even brought up deposit accounts on my phone because their computers cannot go on a lot of places. They then could bring up the new credit union to verify it was not a scam. But they now know about depositaccounts.com and I told them all about it and how I had read about bankdeals and Ken on the front page of the WSJ years ago probably in the late 90's or early 2000's and they were very impressed with the site when I told them all about it and what it could do about heath ratings even and told them that is how I found out about them when my credit union stopped paying 6.5% on $25,000 on my reward checking account in 2010. Then they asked  do you know we match rates and I said yes but you always say no and the last time was Dec. so I stopped asking. She said lets try again.

They accepted it. They faxed to the other credit union. So now I not only get .65 more basis points for another 5 years it will be split and I will be 100% insured and I won't have to wait until July. She said you can add more to transfer to this CD if you want but I said if I split it I can leave it for another 5 years when this 5 years are up if I am still alive and I will stay local if your rates are good. That seemed to satisfy them. They even filled out the form I needed for their credit union, printed it out I read it and signed it and they made copies of everything for me and faxed it to the credit union to deposit it in their CD and the papers to finish the opening in the new credit union. This was Friday. The new credit union has not approved me yet but I am hopeful. Then I will have to fill out for the transfer and again have that one faxed to them. I had to unfreeze my information for the new credit union so it will probably take a little longer.

I did take get a PM that the fax was blurry, so I took a picture of it, emailed it to my computer so it would be safer and copied and pasted it a PM. Should have thought of this first but I would have

missed the new Roth rate at my local credit union.

So I just want to say NEVER GIVE UP on asking for a match in person if you can and drive that 12 miles. It did pay this time. I will start asking them again. Glad that when I said internet it triggered questions. Glad that they cared enough to do it.

@Ally that is a good point to never give up. I have had a few CD's with United States Federal FCU for many years and they have been really good to me. Like you I had asked a few times in the last couple of years to match a rate and was turned down but just recently I had a jumbo CD maturing with them and when I called in to have the money wired out for a better paying 5 year CD she asked why and I told her and to my luck she just happened to be a manager and approved it. She also gave me her direct phone and email contact info and asked if I would call her with any future questions or requests. Made me happy!
