5.60% 60-Month CD at a DC Credit Union (Library of Congress)

Library of Congress FCU has some competitive certificate rates on share certificate terms from 3 to 60 months. The yields range from 5.10% APY for a 3-month term to 5.60% APY for 60-month term. The mininum deposit is $500. Traditional, Roth, SEP and Education IRA certificate rates are 10 basis points higher. The rate table is dated as of November 1, 2007, so these rates should hold for awhile. Below is the full list of CD rates:

The credit union also has a competitive money market account that currently pays 4.65% APY for balances over $20K and 4.40% APY for balances between $2.5K and $20K. The minimum balance to avoid monthly fees is $2,500. The credit union provides 25 free checks per year with this account.

In addition to employees and volunteers of the Libary of Congress, membership is open to anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Washington, DC. Please refer to their membership page for full details. Membership requires a $5 fee and a minimum $5 deposit into your share savings account.

The credit union is federally insured by the NCUA (Charter # 266). It has $141.2 million in assets and 10,499 members.

Oh what a shame, I wish I could be a member of the Library of Congress Credit Union for a 60-month IRA at 5.7%!!! I have about only a $500 IRA left that I'd love to get in there! I wonder if I read their membership rules correctly... :o) Other great offers by the Banking Guy (despite the downward rates) ask for a larger deposit. Adela
