Security Service Federal Credit Union
Update 1/5/08: The rates have gone down. Please refer to the credit union's website for the latest rates.

Security Service Federal Credit Union has some competive long-term certificate rates with a top yield of 5.40% APY for a 3-year term and a minimum $100K deposit. The yield on the 2-year Jumbo CD is close to this at 5.35% APY. Lower yields are available for smaller deposits. With a $500 minimum, the yields for the 2 and 3-year CDs are 5.20% and 5.25% APY. These are also available for IRA certificates.

My last report on this credit union was in November 2006 when it was offering a 6% 15-month CD.

Membership is open to those who live, work or worship in Texas counties of Medina, Atascosa, Uvalde or South Bexar in addition to other areas. In Colorado the eligible counties include El Paso, Pueblo and Denver. There are several groups which can also qualify you for membership including the UT at San Antonio Alumni Association. Please refer to the credit union's ways-to-join page for more details. Membership requires a $5 minimum deposit into a share savings account.

Branches are located in the Texas cities of San Antonio, Schertz and Boerne, and in the Colorado cities of Colorado Springs, Denver, Fountain and Pueblo. The credit union is federally insured by the NCUA (Charter # 11065). It's a large credit union with $4.3 billion in assets and 632,378 members.
