High-Yield Reward Checking Account at Shell FCU in Houston - Local Only

Jun 15, 2010 - 8:21 AM by Ken Tumin

Shell Federal Credit Union

Shell Federal Credit Union is offering a high-yield reward checking account called BE GREEN Checking. It has two downsides for reward checking: above average debit card usage requirements and a balance cap that's a little below average. Nevertheless, it's nice to see another reward checking account available in a big city. Below are the rates and features if certain monthly requirements are met (as of 6/15/2010):

  • 3.08% APY on balances up to $20,000
  • 0.10% APY on portion of balance over $20,000
  • 0.05% base rate if requirements are not met
  • All ATM fees reimbursed

Monthly requirements include:

  • 20 debit card purchases
  • 1 direct deposit or automatic payment
  • Access online banking
  • Receive e-statements

Other features of this account include:

  • $25 minimum to open the account
  • No minimum balance
  • No monthly service charge

As you might expect, Shell FCU began as a credit union for the employees of Shell Oil Company. However, membership is now open to anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Harris County, Texas. This is described in the credit union's Knowledge Base Q&A.

Branches are located in the Texas cities of Houston, Deer Park, Pasadena and La Porte.

The credit union's ratings for safety and soundness are mixed: 5 stars (superior) at BauerFinancial, 3 stars (performing) at Bankrate.com and an overall health score of 3 out of 5 at DepositAccounts.com (see our Shell FCU rates and reviews page). The ratings are based on 3/31/10 data except for Bankrate which is still based on 12/31/09 data. The credit union is federally insured by the NCUA (Charter # 1941).

check this out!, buzz from CNBC ( the stock pusher crowd)

"The Buzz this week that the Federal Reserve won’t raise interest rates until 2012."

You read that right. Not 2010. Not 2011. But 2012.

Better hope you got your million in CD's now , at these rates it will be ****ed near impossible to use CD interest as a supplemental income stream. lol.

Best you can do is hope you have enough to sustain you even with low rates and hold on till they break. and hope the dollar maintains itself and doesn't go haywire like money did in Germany back in the learly 30's, where you can wall paper your house with it.

hmmm wonder if the oil clean up Co sell stock.
