$100 Gas Card Checking Account Promotion at People's United Bank - Northeast Only

People's United Bank

People's United Bank is offering a $100 gas card when you open any personal checking account and perform certain activities. The account must be opened with a minimum of $25 by 10/31/2011. They give you three choices of activities which must be completed within 60 days of account opening. You can choose any one of the following to qualify for the bonus:

  • Receive a recurring direct deposit of at least $100
  • Use the debit card to make at least 10 purchases of at least $25 each
  • Make at least 5 payments of at least $25 each using Online Banking

The promotion is listed on the bank's home page. Here's the link to the bank's promotional webpage. Please refer to the small print on that page for the full details.

Thanks to the reader who PM'ed me news of this promotion.

On the promo page, there's a link to an online application with two checking account choices. The best one is the Plus Checking which has no monthly fee if you maintain direct deposit or if you're at least 65. The other one is the Advantage Checking which has a monthly fee unless you maintain a minimum combined deposit balance of $5,000 or if you meet some other requirements.

The bank's application lists the following geographic restriction:

Customers residing in the following states are eligible to open accounts: Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire.

People's United Bank has over 370 branches throughout these Northeast states.

Danversbank Acquisition

You may have heard about People's United in January when they announced they intended to acquire Danversbank of Massachusetts. That acquisition was completed on June 30th, and Danversbank is now officially part of People's United. I'm happy to see Danversbank is still offering its Free Reward Checking account with a 3.01% APY on balances up to $25K. This account used to be available online to people in any state. However, this is now only a local deal.

I'm not sure if this Free Reward Checking account would qualify for this gas card promotion. If you live near a Danversbank branch and you are interested in this account, you should check with the bank.

People's United Bank is a sizable bank with $24.65 billion in assets. It has an overall health score at of 5 stars (out of 5) with a Texas Ratio of 12.07% (above average) based on June 2011 data. Please refer to our financial overview of People's United Bank for more details. The bank has been a FDIC member since 1988 (FDIC Certificate # 27334).

Other Bank and Credit Union Bonuses

We have a new bank promotions page with a table of all of the active bank and credit union promotions. You can filter the table based on the type of promotion and based on your state. I have more details about how to use this page in this blog post.

Gee, they don't give any REAL details about (after jumping through all their 'hoops' what the "gas card is"!

Likely good only at the most expensive station brand!  I really liked it better when I got a toaster for opening a new account etc.!!!!!!

Does anyone know if having a danversbank rewards checking account disqualifies us for this bonus?

I just signed up for a Free Rewards Checking account, and the CSR said it qualifies for the $100 Gas Card offer, just fulfill the qualifications and you get the card. In October, I'll be sent another debit card with the People's United logo on it, until then, I use the Danversbank Debit Card they gave me after my sign up.

it appears this offer has been withdrawn. the website promo page is down, and, according to the terms of the offer, it was to be withdrawn on the 31 Oct 2011 anyway. By the way, I haven't received the gas card yet, according to their terms they have til 1/27/12 to send me an email on how to redeem for the card.

Hi Nery,

They have until 1/27/2012 to send you a email with directions on what to do to get the $100 gas card. I,myself, am waiting for that email! I talked to a branch manager, she said once a month they send out the emails to get the gas card. We both should get the emails soon. Incidentally, don't put your account number in a public forum, such as this. you leave yourself open to fraudulent charges on your account.

I received the email on how to get the $100 Gas Card on the 27th, at 4:45PM, I guess they wanted to wait until the last minute! I completed the email's required actions and according to the supplier, will get my Gas Card in 10 to 14 days. So, in response to an earlier post in this thread, I can say, yes the danversbank Free Rewards Checking account IS eligible for the gas card. Thanks to Ken for posting the offer!

I did receive my gas card awhile ago, but more of a surprise was the interest statement I received from the bank with $100. interest.   Therefore be prepared to pay taxes on your gas card.  What a rip off.

Hi everyone,

Today I received my $100 Gas card, only took a few days from completing the email's directions. I look forward to using the card,I expect next year to get a 1099 INT form and have to pay taxes on it because technically the card is viewed as "interest". Also, PU has dropped their Free Rewards RCA rate to 2.25% so I'll be looking to transfer to another RCA soon.
