*** Must be a monthly cycle employer direct deposit - no exceptions. Said $5,000 + balances earn zero interest so keep balance below $5,000 (seemed uncertain as to whether it was just the portion above $5,000 or not)...

The above comment is inaccurate.  Direct deposit is NOT limited to only "employer direct deposit - no exceptions".

'Nuff said disclosures:

*Must enroll in Online Banking, Mobile Banking, eStatements and Direct Deposit. No Checks will be issued with this account. Must have a Debit Card with 20 transactions per statement cycle. Interest is earned up to $5,000 only. After that the account will earn .10% on balances. APY is 5.125%.

That was what the Alden CU rep said to me on the phone - verbatim - please explain what will meet the cycle requirement  for direct deposit if a direct deposit is not actually necessary as stated in your terms.

The CU rep did NOT say that a direct deposit was not required; she said that an "employer" direct deposit was not required.  There are all kinds of other direct deposits--social security, annuity income from insurance companies, bond income, etc.  I get all those monthly.
