1.85% Reward Checking Account at Bank of Hiawassee in Georgia

POSTED ON BY

Update 11/09/09: The top rate has fallen to 1.85% APY.

Bank of Hiawassee is offering a reward checking account called Green Reward Checking. It pays 1.85% APY on balances up to $100,000 (0.76% for above) and refunds ATM fees nationwide (up to $25 per month) if the following monthly requirements are met:
  • 10 debit card purchases
  • one direct deposit or ACH auto transaction
  • receive electronic statements
If these are not met, the rate falls to 0.10%. Minimum to open the account is $100. There is no minimum balance requirement and no monthly maintenance fee. Customers over 55 also receive some extra perks including free checks.

The rate of this account is a little low for reward checking accounts, but the nice feature is the balance cap of $100,000 rather than the typical $25,000.

According to the bank's application page, a branch visit is required for new customers. Branches are located in the northern Georgia cities of Hiawassee, Young Harris, Blairsville and Blue Ridge.

The bank has been FDIC insured since 1934 (FDIC Certificate # 10054).
