4.00% 11-Month CD and 4.60% 46-Month CD at BayPort Credit Union in Virginia

BayPort Credit Union is offering three competitive share certificate specials. These include a 4.00% APY 11-month CD, a 4.05% APY 25-month CD and a 4.60% APY 46-month CD. Minimum deposit is $2,500. These rates require a checking account with direct deposit. But even without this relationship, these specials are very competitive with rates just 25 basis points lower. The specials are available as both regular and IRA certificates. These rates are listed in the credit union's rate table as of 1/21/09. The effective date on the table is 1/13/09.

Membership is open to those who live, work, worship, volunteer, or attend school in the following Virginia cities: Chesapeake, Poqouson, Franklin, Portsmouth, Hampton, Suffolk, Newport News, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Williamsburg, or in the following Virginia counties: Gloucester, Southampton, Isle of Wight, Surry, James City or York.

Branches are located in the Virginia cities of Newport News, Chesapeake, Yorktown, Hampton, Smithfield, Suffolk, Hayes and Williamsburg.

The credit union has some decent ratings for soundness: 5 stars (superior) at BauerFinancial and 3 stars (performing) at Bankrate.com. Both ratings are based on 9/30/08 financial data. The credit union is federally insured by the NCUA (Charter # 61330).
5.77% 19-Month CD at a Virginai CU (Newport)
Newport News Shipbuilding Employees' Credit Union is offering some competitive certificate specials. The highest rate is a 5.77% APY 19-month CD. The others include a 5.51% APY CD with terms of either 8 months or 37 months. The minimum deposit is $2.5K. These special rates require maintaining a checking account with direct deposit. Without this relation, the rates are about 0.25% lower. These same specials are also available in an IRA certificate. The IRA minimum is $1K.
