Founded in 1971, SECNY’s original FOM included the employees of most of the school districts in Central New York, in addition to the employees of several municipalities and local industries. In 2001, the Credit Union was granted a federal charter, expanding the FOM to include the residents of four Central New York counties. SECNY has continued to maintain its focus on the area’s educational systems, including fostering student-run SECNY branches. According to a Onondaga Central Schools press release,

Onondaga Central School District and SECNY Federal Credit Union are pleased to announce the opening of a student-run credit union branch located at the high school. A grand opening celebration will take place on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 11:00am.

Earlier this year, long-time connections with School Ambassadors led to a financial literacy presentation for a Personal Finance class. After the students (and faculty) recognized the value of this information, the idea of a student-run branch became reality. As a credit union rooted in education for over 45 years, SECNY believes this is the next step to increasing the positive impact of financial education in the community.
