University of Kentucky FCU Celebrates With Special CD Rates

University of Kentucky Credit Union (UKFCU) is celebrating the opening of its sixth branch (Tate Creek) with limited-time special rates on three CDs: 1-year (1.25% APY), 2-year (1.55% APY), and 3-year (1.80% APY). The minimum opening deposit is $1k with no balance cap, and the dividends are paid annually.

All three CDs have been part of UKFCU’s product line since early 2011, with the current celebratory rates being the highest APYs in that 5-year history.

As stated at the bottom of the Rates page, the Early Withdrawal Penalty reads as follows:

Penalty is 90 days interest for terms up to 18 months.
Penalty for terms two years or greater is 180 days interest.

In addition to the NCUA insurance coverage on funds up to $250k, Excess Share Insurance Corporation insures funds up to an additional $250k.

Headquartered in Lexington, University of Kentucky Federal Credit Union’s field of membership is primarily connected to its namesake: University of Kentucky faculty, staff, and students, both full- and part-time.

Complete qualification details are available on UKFCU's Membership page, which lists more than 90 Lexington area businesses, organizations, and associations that qualify for membership.

The very last entry in that list reads,

UKFCU has added certain geographic areas to its field of membership. If you live, work, worship or attend school in the highlighted area on the map, you are now eligible for membership.

The highlighted area of the map roughly includes the northern half of Lexington inside the beltway and northwest Fayette County.

Joining UKFCU and/or opening a CD can be done online, or at any of six Kentucky branches, all located in Lexington.

6% 6-Month CD at a Kentucky CU
The University of Kentucky Federal Credit Union is offering a 6.00% APY 6-month CD. There's a minimum required deposit of $1K.

The special has a holiday gift theme so even though it says it's a limited time offer, it appears likely to last through December. Perhaps other banks and credit unions will be offering similar holiday gifts.

Most of its standard certificate of deposit and savings account rates are nothing special. It does offer a 2-year Jumbo Share Certificate with a rate of 5% APY. The required minimum deposit is $90K.
