In 1936, ten employees of the downtown Detroit office of Michigan Bell Telephone Company founded the Telephone Employees Credit Union, after chipping in $10 each. In 1982, after Michigan Bell was broken into separate, the credit union name was changed to Telcom. The name continued to imply (erroneously) that the credit union was only for members of the telecom industry. The Credit Union was re-branded "Vibe" in 2013 and the field of membership was greatly expanded; today Vibe Credit Union has over 31,000 members and assets in excess of $413 Million.
