Survey of the Best CD Rates for August 11, 2014

Survey of the Best CD Rates for August 11, 2014

Treasury yields can give hints about where CD rates are headed, and if that’s the case, we may see more CD rate cuts in the future. Treasury yields went down last week with the yield on the 10-year Treasury note nearing a low for the year. This year was suppose to be the year of rising Treasury yields. This Forbes article describes how the falling Treasury yields have surprised the experts, and why falling yields may continue:

How could Wall Street economists have been so wrong? On January 1st the consensus forecast of the 66 most senior economists for the year end 10-year US Treasury yield was 3.44%. At the time, 10 year Treasury yields were hovering around 3%, their highest level in almost three years. Since then the benchmark interest rate has declined as low at 2.34% last week

It’s yet another example of the unpredictability of interest rates.

Just like last week, there were a few CD rate hikes at two internet banks. The first is State Farm Bank. This might seem like a regular bank since State Farm insurance agents can help you open accounts, but it’s essentially an internet bank. Once your account is opened, the account must be managed online or by phone. State Farm Bank increased its long-term CD rates to competitive levels: 3-year (1.45% APY), 4-year (1.75% APY), and 5-year (2.15% APY). These are also available in IRAs.

The other internet bank with rate hikes is EverBank. It increased two of its long-term CD rates to competitive levels: 1.46% APY for the 3-year term and 1.85% APY for the 4-year term. Its 5-year CD APY remains at 2.30% which is a top rate for nationally available 5-year CDs. It’s tied with Synchrony Bank and CIT Bank. One advantage that EverBank has is that its CDs require a minimum deposit of only $1,500. To get 2.30% APY requires $100K at CIT Bank and $25K at Synchrony Bank. One downside with EverBank is a harsh early withdrawal penalty. It’s one-fourth of the total interest that would have been earned on the principal balance of the account if funds had not been withdrawn prior to the maturity date. This equals 15 months of interest on a 5-year CD. When taking into account early withdrawal penalties, Synchrony Bank has the best deal if you can deposit a minimum of $25,000. In that case you get 2.30% APY for the 5-year CD and an early withdrawal penalty of only 180 days of interest. You can see how these three 5-year CDs compare when closed early in our CD early withdrawal penalty calculator.

In addition to these two internet banks, two other institutions began offering very competitive CD rates that are nationally available. The first is the large credit union Mountain America. It increased its 5-year CD yield by 20 basis points to 2.20% APY. The other institution is Triumph Savings Bank which has branches in the Dallas area. It has two competitive short-term CDs: an 18-month CD with a 1.25% APY and a 12-month CD with a 1.10% APY.

Not all was good news for savers. Third Federal reduced the rates of its CD specials, but they’re still competitive so they remain in the survey. The 29-month and 49-month CD yields fell 10 basis points to 1.25% APY and 1.75% APY respectively.

The best long-term CD deal continues to be the 3.04% APY 7-year add-on CD at Tobyhanna Federal Credit Union. Many readers have shared their experiences and opinions on this CD in the comments of my Tobyhanna CD review post. One note about these types of deals at small credit unions is that there’s always a risk that the CD features may not hold up through the entire term. I did this post a couple of weeks ago on what happened at another credit union.

An alternative to short-term CDs is long-term CDs that have mild early withdrawal penalties. Two banks with top 5-year CD rates and a mild early withdrawal penalty are Synchrony Bank and Barclays. Both have very competitive 5-year CDs with an early withdrawal penalty of only 6 months of interest. I included the effective yields of these CDs when closed early in the tables below. If you want to compare the effective yields of other CDs after the early withdrawal penalties, please refer to our CD early withdrawal penalty calculator.

The risks of planning for early withdrawals of long-term CDs were highlighted by the deposit agreement change at Ally. The risks have also been seen at credit unions which have raised the early withdrawal penalties on existing CDs. I have more details in this blog post.
