$100 Checking Account Bonus at Mountain America Credit Union in UT, AZ, NV & NM
Mountain America Credit Union (MACU) is listing another checking account promotion. The bonus is a little smaller than what it was offering in November, but it's still a good deal. The new bonus is $100, and it requires that you print the coupon and bring it into any branch. At the branch, you must open a new checking account, set up direct deposit and eStatements. The coupon and the offer details are available at MACU's Facebook promotions page as of 6/11/2012. The promotion is subject to change at any time.
Below is the offer's small print:
To qualify for and redeem reward, you must bring this coupon to a Mountain America branch, sign up for eStatements at account setup and initiate a monthly direct deposit such as payroll, pension, unemployment, Social Security or other government benefits within 60 days of coupon redemption. Reward will be deposited into account within 30 business days after eStatement setup and initial direct deposit posting. Account must remain open for minimum of six months from reward date, or it will be debited from account at closing. Limit one reward per person, per household. Offer not available on account conversions or in combination with any other offer. Employees of Mountain America not eligible. Reward is considered interest and will be reported on IRS Form 1099-INT. Variable annual percentage yield (.10% as of 10/1/11) available with interest-earning reward and $1,000 minimum balance; APY may change after account opening, and fees could reduce earnings on account. Membership required - based on eligibility. Limited time offer subject to change at any time.
Checking Account Options
They do offer a free checking account called, MyFree Checking. There is a $2 fee if you want paper statements instead of e-statements. The other checking account is called MyStyle Checking, and it does have potential monthly fees. Some of the fee details are described in the MyStyle Checking FAQ. This account does provide some nice perks, but you have to make sure you can avoid the fees.
Credit Union Membership
Credit union membership is open to members of the American Consumer Council. Council membership costs $12, and is open to anyone. This council is listed in the credit union's SEG Affiliated Associations page. For more ways to qualify for membership, please refer to the credit union's Become a Member page. In my email to this credit union a couple of years ago, I mentioned that I was interested in becoming a member via this council. Here's the reply I received:
We would be happy to take a membership application for you. If you have a branch near you please visit them with your picture ID. They will need $25.00 to get the account open and going. If you plan on opening a checking account that will require a minimum of $100.00.
If you are not near a branch location you can apply online or call us at 1-800-748-4302.
