Checking Bonus & Competitive CD Rates at BrightStar Credit Union in South Florida

Brightstar Credit Union

BrightStar Credit Union has two reasons why people in Southeast Florida may want to join. First, they're offering a $100 to new members who open its free checking account. Second, BrightStar has some competitive CD and IRA CD rates.

First, the $100 checking account bonus requires some work. The new member must maintain a minimum of 4 eligible transactions each month for 7 months. However, many transactions qualify. According to the offer's small print "Eligible transactions include: Visa Check Card purchases, checks clearing, direct deposit of payroll or other funds, bills paid via Online BillPay, in-branch withdrawals or deposits, ATM deposits." The checking is easy to maintain. It has no minimum balance requirements and no monthly fee. More details about the bonus and the checking account are listed in BrightStar's online specials page. There's also a link to an online application on this page.

In addition to the checking bonus, you may want to join to take advantage of some competitive CD and IRA CD rates. To qualify for the best rates, you must be a Platinum Star Member which requires a checking relationship with certain services and/or minimum balances. Some of the competitive CD rates for Platinum Star Members include a 1.50% APY 23-month CD, a 1.25% APY 13-month CD and a 1.85% APY Jumbo 5-year CD. The 23-month and 13-month CDs require a $500 minimum deposit. The Jumbo CD requires a $95K minimum. Without Platinum Star Membership, these CD rates are 25 bps lower. These rates are listed in the credit union's rates sheet as of 12/13/2012.

Credit Union Membership Eligibility

Credit union membership is open to anyone who lives, works or goes to school in Broward or Palm Beach Counties, Florida. Please refer to the credit union's membership page for the full details. There's also a link to an online application in this membership page. The application is powered by Andera which is common for online applications. The application allows new members to open the checking accounts and the standard CDs. You need to call the credit union for the special and Jumbo CDs.

Thank you, Ken, for posting about Brightstar.  FWIW I happen to be a member of this CU.  It's a good CU and I've had a satisfactory experience, though my membership is currently seeing only a minimum level of activity.  Still, "once a member always a member", and I'm doing the minimum required to maintain my membership status.

The only teensy quibble I'd have with your post, Ken, concerns achieving membership.  I don't live within a thousand miles of South Florida and I never travel there.  Suffice it to say there are ways to join Brightstar nevertheless.  :-)  However, considerable effort is required.
