4% APY 9-Mo CD Special At Advantage Plus Federal Credit Union (ID/WY)

UPDATE 9/4/2019: Fine print added to Advantage Plus FCU's Rate page – "First $50,000 at 4%, everything above $50,000 at 2.5%."

Deal Summary: Share Certificate Specials – 9-month (4.00% APY up to $50k; 2.5% APY on $50k+) and 19-month (3.00% APY); 60-month Share Certificate (3.25% APY); $500 minimum deposit.

Availability: Residents of five southeast Idaho counties and Lincoln County, Wyoming.

Good news - 4.00% APY

While this great rate is limited to a small section of the country, a CD offering 4.00% APY deserves to be recognized. In addition to the 9-month Share Certificate Special, Advantage Plus Federal Credit Union (Advantage Plus FCU) is currently offering a 19-month Share Certificate Special earning 3.00% APY. The minimum opening deposit for either the 9- and 19-month is $500, with no stated balance cap.

When I first saw these rates, I thought there must be some type of limitation. CSR stated “there are no strings attached. No balance cap, no checking requirement … just a good rate on a Share Certification Special.”

According to CSR, the Early Withdrawal Penalty (EWP) for any Advantage Plus FCU Share Certificate is “either one year's interest or $50, whichever is greater.” In the case of the 9-month Certificate, the EWP would be the greater of all interest earned or $50.

Many thanks to DA reader, Carpline, for his Forum post about the 4% Share Certificate Special.

60-month Share Certificate

Even though the 60-month Share Certificate isn’t a “Special,” it’s offering a rather special 3.25% APY and can be opened with a $500 minimum deposit. The 60-month is one of the few CDs I’ve seen that has had a rate increase in the last couple of months. In December, the APY increased from 2.25% to 3.00%, and earlier this week, another 25 bps were added.

Five people qualify and all are family members and all work at the CC.

If you live in FL, MidFlorida has 3.00 5-year and 2.00 1-year. Not great but not bad given the recent dive in rates.

GREAT rate hope to be available nationwide.

Regarding 60 month certificates, I just checked and NFCU continues to make available their offering having an APY of 3.25%. I do not find the difference between $500 to open and $1000 to open significant. NFCU is not available to everyone to join. But I believe a great many more folks may join NFCU than are eligible to join Advantage Plus.

In my view, while the Advantage Plus 9 month CD is special, the Advantage Plus 60 month CD is not.

Lock in these higher rates if you can. They are dropping like a stone.

I applied for the membership last Thursday to open a 9 month CD, I just noticed tonight that they changed their rate on the rate sheet as follow: ( * First $50,000 at 4%, everything above $50,000 at 2.5%). Not worth all the troubles! Terrible! It only lasted one day. They got Ken and many DA readers exited for nothing and got free publicity. Shame on them!

Well Human they have every right to change their terms.....especially since they probably got flooded with money that would eventually hurt their profits with rates taking a nosedive. I would do exactly the same thing if I were them. It's called BUSINESS........If you don't like it then I guess you should start your own bank.

I spoke with the CU today and I was told that it was an error and they never intended to offer the previous rate. They could have told that to Ken when he spoke with them and before Ken wrote a review about the rate. Not being honest and again shame on them!
