This week, Athol Credit Union (ACU) announced the addition of a new rewards checking account – Umbrella Checking, which earns 2.25% APY on qualified balances up to $25k. Qualified balances over $25k earn 0.50% APY, with non-qualifying balances earning 0.10% APY.

Qualifying Requirements

  • Have at least 12 debit card purchases
  • Receive eStatements
  • At least one direct deposit per statement cycle

The Umbrella Checking account has no monthly service fee, no minimum balance requirement, and can be opened with a minimum $100 deposit. If you open an Umbrella Checking account with non-ACC funds, you qualify to receive an actual umbrella.

Umbrellas are on a first-come, first-serve basis and are limited while supplies
last and are only available to accounts opened with funds from a non ACU account.

Headquartered in Athol, Massachusetts, Athol Credit Union’s field of membership (FOM) is residency based, with individuals who live, work, or attend school in 71 named towns in the Massachusetts counties of Franklin, Hampshire, and Worcester eligible to join.

Joining Athol Credit Union and/or opening an Umbrella Checking account can be done online, or at either of the two Massachusetts branches located in Athol and Orange.

Athol Credit Union has an internet division called Quabbin Online Credit Union that's offering some very competitive savings account rates and short-term CD rates. Unfortunately, the credit union's field of membership is narrow so only a few lucky readers will be able to qualify. Thanks to the reader who mentioned it in the comments.
