PenFed isn’t the only credit union offering 3% CDs. Another credit union came out with a December CD special with some even higher rates. It’s Credit Union West, and it’s offering 5-year CDs and IRA CDs with rates around 3%. The best deal is the 5-year Jumbo IRA CD which has a 3.20% APY. Minimum deposit is $50,000. For a $10,000 minimum, the APY is 3.15%. The regular CD rates are a little lower, but they’re still very competitive. For a $50,000 minimum, the APY is 2.95%, and for a $10,000 minimum, the APY is 2.90%. The rates and the CD disclosure are listed in the credit union’s share rates schedule as of 12/04/2013. According to the disclosure, the certificate account’s early withdrawal penalty is 180 days of dividends on the amount withdrawn. Thanks to DA member Alskar who posted on this CD promotion in the forum.

The credit union also offers a reward checking account under the Kasasa brand. I reviewed this account back in May. The rate actually went up since then, but the balance cap remains on the low side.

The credit union has an overall health grade at DepositAccounts.com of an A with a Texas ratio of 0.43% (excellent) based on June 2013 data. Please refer to our financial summary of Credit Union West for more details. The credit union is federally insured by the NCUA (Charter # 68421).
How These CDs and IRA CDs Compare
It’s nice to see another credit union with 3% CDs. Hopefully, this is the start of a trend.
The best 5-year CD and IRA CD rate that’s nationally available is 3.04% APY at Pentagon Federal Credit Union (see post). Credit Union West’s 5-year IRA CD rates are higher, but the regular CD rates are a little lower. Credit Union West’s early withdrawal penalty of 180 days interest is smaller than PenFed’s EWP of 365 days. These rates are accurate as of 12/4/2013.
