Illinois-based DuPage Credit Union (DuPage) has been offering its competitive rewards checking account, High-Yield Checking, for about three years. The current 2.78% APY on qualifying balances up to $15k has been in effect for about five months; the previous rate (3.04% APY) had been in effect since July 2020. Qualifying balances over $15k and non-qualifying balances both earn 0.05% APY.

The monthly qualification requirements are slightly different than that of a typical rewards checking account:

  • Spend $1,200 or more per billing cycle with any DuPage CU credit card*.
  • Set up monthly direct deposit(s) of $500 (single) or $1,000 (cumulative)
  • Sign up for free Online Statements.

*The Inspire Cash Back Signature card can be used to meet the monthly qualification requirements and also earns cash back (3% on travel, dining and entertainment; 2% at grocery stores; and 1% everywhere else).

The High-Yield Checking account has no monthly fee, no minimum balance requirement, and no minimum opening deposit. Nationwide ATM fees up to $20 will be reimbursed, if qualifying requirements are met. DuPage participates in the CO-OP ATM network, providing members with access to more than 30,000 fee-free ATMs nationwide. Checking writing is available (maximum of 200 per month) and a free Visa® debit card will be issued following account opening. There is a limit of one High-Yield Checking account per Social Security number.

High-Yield Savings

DuPage CU also offers a High-Yield Savings account, as a companion account to the High-Yield Checking and Cash Back Checking accounts. The High-Yield Savings account currently earns 1.00% APY on qualifying balances up to $55k; qualifying balances over $55k and non-qualifying balances earn the Membership Savings account rate, currently 0.05% APY.

Like the High-Yield Checking account, the High-Yield Savings account has no monthly service charge, minimum balance requirement, or minimum opening deposit. There is a limit of one High-Yield Savings account per Social Security number.

Annual Earnings of Combined High-Yield Checking and Savings Accounts

The potential combined annual earnings of a High-Yield Checking account (2.78% APY/$15k) and a High-Yield Savings account (1.00% APY/$55k) is approximately $967 (1.38% APY/$70k), which is a very competitive APY for a good-sized balance in a rewards checking/saver combo.

Cash Back Checking

The Cash Back Checking account offered by DuPage CU currently earns 0.50% cash back on up to $5,000 in debit card purchases per month. If you are planning on maintaining a balance of less than $11,000, the Cash Back Checking account would probably be a better deal than the High-Yield Checking account, as the maximum annual earnings for the Cash Back Checking account is $300 ($25 per month).

How the High-Yield Checking Compares

Given the multi-state FOM, a comparison to nationally available Rewards Checking Accounts is appropriate. When compared to the High Yield Rewards Checking Accounts tracked by DepositAccounts.com that are available nationwide and have maximum qualifying balances of at least $15k, DuPage Credit Union’s High-Yield Checking APY currently ranks fourth.
