Education First Credit Union (OH) Offers Competitive 30-Month CD Special
The Education First Credit Union (Education First) product line includes two CD Specials: 30-month (5.25% APY) and 14-month (5.00% APY). Of the two, the 30-month CD Special offers the more competitive rate. The minimum opening deposit is $500, with no stated balance cap. As noted in the CD Specials landing page, these are a "Limited time offer. Available for new and existing money."
Excess Share Insurance
In addition to NCUA insurance, Education First offers Excess Share Insurance.
Federal Insurance coverage of your funds with the credit union is guaranteed up to $250,000. But we go even a step further, by providing every account with Excess Share Insurance for another $250,000 through ESI. Deposits are therefore insured up to $500,000 with combined Federal & Private Insurance.
Availability
Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, Education First Credit Union’s field of membership (FOM) is both community-based and industry-affiliated.
Individuals who live, work, worship, or attend school in the Ohio counties of Delaware, Fairfield, Franklin, Licking, Madison, Pickaway, or Union (Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area) qualify for membership.
All current and retired Ohio school employees are also eligible to join, as are those attending an Ohio college or university.
Immediate family members of a current Education First member are welcome to apply. “Immediate family” is defined as spouse, parents, siblings, children, grandparents, grandchildren, including in-law and step- relationships.
Account Opening
Joining Education First and/or opening a 30-month CD Special can be done online, or at either of two full-service Ohio branches, both located in Columbus.
To start your membership at the credit union, a minimum deposit of $5.00 must be made into your Share Savings Account. No monthly access fees are associated with the Account, and you earn dividends on balances over $200.00.
Funding and Other Particulars
The following information is from a conversation with CSR.
- Funding – ACH, wire ($20 fee), or internal transfer.
- Ownership – Individual, joint, or trust.
- CO-OP Shared Branch Participant – Yes.
- Early Withdrawal Penalty – 180 days on amount withdrawn, with partial withdrawals allowed; any withdrawal made within 180 days of account opening will reduce the principal.
- Dividends – Compounded/credited monthly and cannot be withdrawn penalty free.
- Maturing Funds – Cashier’s check to address on file or internal transfer to an Education First Share Savings account.
- Beneficiaries – Unlimited, with equal shares; Social Security numbers are required.
- Grace Period – 10 calendar days before automatic renewal as a 24-month CD.
- Credit Check – Hard pull though Transunion.

Established in 1936, Education First Credit Union’s founding members were a small group of teachers employed by Columbus City Schools system. Education First is a small credit union, with 12,500 members and assets of $142 million, but the potential for substantial growth is quite possible: the expanded FOM now includes the Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), the second largest MSA in Ohio, with a population of more than 2.1 million.
