Minnesota-based Expedition Credit Union (ECU) is currently offering a 15-month CD Special earning 5.51% APY. The minimum opening deposit is $2.5k, with no stated balance cap. While a CD Special sometimes requires new money, the landing page states that “new or existing deposits qualify” when opening a 15-month CD Special.
The five other CDs in the ECU product line are “FlexRate” CDs that feature a bump-up option. According to CSR, the 15-month CD Special does not have a bump-option.
Early Withdrawal Penalty
As stated in the Truth-in-Savings disclosure, the Early Withdrawal Penalty reads as follows:
Terms of 13 to 24 months – 120 days’ interest
According to CSR, partial withdrawals are allowed, but the principal is not protected. “If the account has not yet earned enough interest or if the interest has already been paid, the penalty will be deducted from the principal.”
Excess Share Insurance
In addition to NCUA insurance, Expedition Credit Union offers Excess Share Insurance.
Savings at Expedition Credit Union are federally insured by the NCUA through its National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF) up to at least $250,000 per member, and additional private insurance is provided up to at least $250,000 per member by the Excess Share Insurance Corporation (ESI), for combined coverage of at least $500,000 - the highest level of combined federal/private share savings insurance available.

Expedition Credit Union is currently the 29th largest credit union headquartered in Minnesota, with more than 17,000 members and assets in excess of $233 million. ECU opened its doors in 1957 as the MEA (Minnesota Education Association) Credit Union, serving the members of the MEA Teachers Union. In 1998, MEA and the Minnesota Federation of Teachers merged and became Education Minnesota. As a result of that merger, MEA Credit Union changed their FOM to include all staff and members of the new teachers union and rebranded as United Educators Credit Union in 1999. As the FOM continued to grow and diversify, the “Expedition” rebrand occurred in 2021. According to the ECU About Us page,
To reflect our growing membership, break the perceived barriers that we are exclusive to educators only, and continue to grow in order to survive and thrive into the future, United Educators Credit Union made the decision to change its name to Expedition Credit Union.
