Arizona-based Horizon Community Bank (HCB) has recently raised the rate on its Star Checking account to 3.25% APY on qualifying balances up to $25k. All balances over $25k and non-qualifying balances earn 0.30% APY.

DA began tracking the Star Checking account in July 2010, when the APY was 1.76%. The APY began dropping in October 2010, finally settling at 0.90% APY in March 2013, where it remained for more than four years. The Star Checking account didn’t become competitive until last November, when the rate was raised to 3.04% APY. In the past year, a total of 209 bps have been added.

Monthly Qualifying Requirements

  • Have at least 10 debit/credit card purchases
  • Receive e-Statements
  • Log into Online Banking at least once

The Star Checking account requires a minimum $100 opening deposit to open and is only available as a personal account. There is a $3 monthly fee that will be waived with an average monthly balance of $1k.

Availability

Headquartered in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, Horizon Community Bank offers its Star Checking account to residents of Arizona and nearby California and Nevada through an online application.

In addition to being opened online, the Star Checking account can also be opened at any of six full-service Arizona branches, located in Fort Mohave, Lake Havasu City, Mesa, Mohave Valley, Parker, and Quartzsite. There are also three loan offices in Goodyear, Kingman, and Phoenix.

One note about the online application - the first page of the application asks for your Zip Code, “to find your local products and rates.” The online application will accept all Zip Codes, giving the impression that HCB allows nationwide accounts. CSR stated that while the application doesn’t discriminate by Zip Code, once the completed application is submitted and looked at, out-of-area applications will be denied.
