Sandia Area FCU (NM) Raises Rate On 48-Month CD

Availability: Residents of the New Mexico counties of Bernalillo, Cibola, Torrance and Valencia, and the city of Rio Rancho.

Last week, Sandia Area Federal Credit Union (Sandia Area FCU) raised the rates on its 48-Month Share Certificate (2.00% APY). There have been 17 rates changes in the past four years for this Share Certificate, with the current 2.00% APY being the highest rate.

The minimum opening deposit is $500 and there is no maximum balance cap. The 48-month Share Certificate is also available as an IRA (Traditional, Roth and CESA) earning the same APY, with the same funding requirements.

According to CSR, the Early Withdrawal Penalty is 6 months of interest.

Headquartered in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Sandia Area Federal Credit Union’s field of membership is primarily residency based.

Those eligible for membership include individuals who live, work, attend school, or belong to a religious community in the New Mexico counties of Bernalillo (including Kirkland AFB), Cibola, Torrance and Valencia, and the city of Rio Rancho.

Individuals related by descent, adoption, marriage or domestic partnership to anyone eligible for Sandia Area FCU membership also qualify for membership.

Complete membership details can be found on Sandia Area FCU’s Membership page.

Joining Sandia Area FCU and/or opening a Share Certificate can be done online, or at any of five New Mexico branches located in Albuquerque (4) and Rio Rancho. Construction on a new branch in Albuquerque’s Northeast Heights began this month.

There is one aspect of Sandia Area FCU’s membership eligibility that needs to be noted. While the overwhelming majority of eligibility requirements for any credit union are objective (i.e., residency, employment, etc.), Sandia Area FCU lists a rather subjective requirement:

Environmentally Conscious – Believe in or subscribe to the permaculture ethics, consisting of the following principals: care of the earth, care of people, and reinvesting surplus for the benefit of earth and people.

The Credit Union takes its name from the Sandia Mountain Wilderness (a part of the Cibola National Forest east of Albuquerque), so the interest in preserving the local ecology is a natural sequitur.
