Established in 1960, SRP Federal Credit Union is currently South Carolina’s fifth largest credit union with more than 154,000 members and assets in excess of $1 billion. In 1959, the DuPont Company, which then managed the Savannah River Plant (SRP), distributed a questionnaire to all SRP employees to determine the interest in forming a credit union. More than 75% of the 5,465 employees who completed the questionnaire expressed interest, and a few months later, the organizational process began. Between 1973 and 1993, dozens of other SEGs were added – “It seemed everybody wanted to be a member of SRP Federal Credit Union.” When SRP FCU converted to a community charter in 2003, the FOM expanded to include residents of four South Carolina and four Georgia counties. In the last year, SRP became an open, or “easy membership requirement,” credit union.
