Trona Valley Community Federal Credit Union (Trona Valley) has been offering its High Yield Checking for nearly four years, with the 4.00% APY on qualifying balances up to $15k in effect since December 2017. Qualifying balances over $15k earn 0.35% APY, with non-qualify balances earning 0.05% APY.

The High Yield Checking account has no minimum balance requirement, no monthly service fee, and no minimum opening deposit. Nationwide ATM fees will be reimbursed up to a total of $20 per month ($9.99 maximum per transaction), if qualification requirements are met. Unlimited checking writing is available and a free Visa® debit card will be issued following account opening. There is a limit of one account per Social Security number.

Trona Valley’s High Yield Savings account earns 1.00% APY on qualifying balances up to $15k. Qualifying balances over $15k earn 0.35% APY, with non-qualify balances earning 0.05% APY.

Earned rewards from a High Yield Checking account are automatically transferred to the linked High Yield Savings account every month. The High Yield Savings has no minimum balance requirement, no monthly service fee, and no minimum opening deposit. There is a limit of one account per Social Security number.

Trona Valley’s Cash Back Checking account earns 2.00% cash back on debit card purchases, limited to the first $200 of monthly purchases. If you are planning on maintaining a balance of less than $1,200, the Kasasa Cash Back account would probably be a better deal than the Kasasa Cash account; the maximum annual earnings for the Kasasa Cash Back account is $48 ($4 per month).
Availability
Headquartered in Green River, Wyoming, Trona Valley Community Federal Credit Union’s field of membership (FOM) is residency-based, with individuals who live, work, worship, or attend school in any four Utah or six Wyoming counties, eligible for membership.
Utah counties – Daggett, Morgan, Rich, or Summit.
Wyoming counties – the Carbon, Lincoln, Sweetwater, Sublette, Teton, or Uinta.
Immediate family members and those living in the same household of existing Trona Valley members are also eligible to join.
Joining Trona Valley and/or opening a High Yield Check/Cash Back/Savings account(s) can be done online, or at any of four Wyoming branches located in Evanston, Green River, Mountain View, and Rock Springs.
Opening a Share Savings is required to establish a Trona Valley membership. There is no required minimum opening deposit, but a $150 minimum balance is required to earn dividends.
Trona Valley participates in the CO-OP Share Branch network, giving members “free access to over 5,000 credit unions nationwide.”

Trona Valley Community Federal Credit Union is currently the fifth largest credit union headquartered in Wyoming, with nearly 22,000 members and assets in excess of $266 million. Established in 1963, Trona Valley was originally known as FMC Employees Federal Credit Union. (In the 1960s, FMC Corporation mined trona ore in southwest Wyoming.) The Trona Valley rebrand occurred in 1989, following a merger with Stauffer Big Island Federal Credit Union. A community charter covering Southwest Wyoming was adopted in 1999, and was expanded again in 2012 to include ten counties in Wyoming and Utah.
