Atlanta Postal Credit Union has some high yields on its certificates. The most competitive are the 12-month CD with a 4.50% APY and the 24-month CD with a 4.60% APY. Minimum deposit is $500. These same rates and terms are also available as IRA certificates. According to the rate table, these should be in effect through November 26, 2008.

Field of membership is primarily based on select employee groups. In addition to active or retired US Postal Service employees, several other employee groups are listed. Also, all federal employees, active or retired, working or residing in most 310 and 312 zip code area of Georgia are eligible. Membership requires a $25 minimum deposit into a share savings account.

The credit union has some solid financial ratings for soundness: 5 stars (superior) at BauerFinancial and 4 stars (sound) at Bankrate.com. Both ratings are based on 6/30/08 data.

Atlanta Postal Credit Union is federally insured by the NCUA (Charter # 67389).

I'm all for high interest rates, but not into tying my money up long term to get it. CD's are not even a consideration for me right now. I like the liquidity of online savings accounts and their high rate of return, like venturebankdirect.com at 3.8% APY with no minimum balance.

Thanks for the tip Chris, I checked out Venture Bank Direct and have been happy so far. They added an online checking account which is a big plus for me. Makes for easy access.
