Competitive CD Rates in Georgia at Atlanta Postal Credit Union

Atlanta Postal Credit Union

It has been a while since I reported on Atlanta Postal Credit Union. Some other Georgia credit unions had higher rates in 2011, but this year Atlanta Postal Credit Union is on top with competitive CD and IRA CD rates. Two of the best rates include a 2.00% APY 5-year CD and a 1.25% APY 2-year CD. Below is a summary of the certificate rates listed in the credit union's rate sheet as of 4/30/2012.

  • 2.00% APY 5 years
  • 1.75% APY 4 years
  • 1.50% APY 3 years
  • 1.30% APY 30 months
  • 1.25% APY 2 years
  • 1.00% APY 1 year
  • 0.85% APY 6 months
  • 0.75% APY 3 months

Minimum deposit is $500 for the regular certificates and $2,000 for the IRA certificates. The 3-month and 6-month certificates are not available in an IRA. The early withdrawal penalty is 180 days of interest for terms of 1 year and above. The penalty is 90 days of interest for terms under 1 year. Certificate details are listed below the rate table.

One downside with Atlanta Postal Credit Union is that it may not be easy to join for many in Georgia. All residents of Bibb County are eligible to join. However, that appears to be the only county. Membership is primarily based on select employee groups. In addition to active or retired US Postal Service employees, several other employee groups are listed. Also, all federal employees, active or retired, working or residing in most of the 310 and 312 zip code area of Georgia are eligible. Membership requires a $25 minimum deposit into a share savings account. Please refer to the credit union membership page for the full details.

Maybe it's just me, but I think it's kind of funny that the name is ATLANTA Postal Credit Union but the only city with unrestricted membership is Macon.

APCU serves USPS and their families across the United States. The credit union was chartered in Atlanta in 1925 thus the name. APCU is priviledged to serve just over 100,000 members. If you have a relative who is a post office employee, you can join and take advantage of the credit union's great rates. Give them a call at 800 849 8431. A real person answers the telephone!
