Affinity Federal Credit Union CD Specials Follows CD Rates Trend
Just as I was about to publish this blog post, I noticed that Affinity Federal Credit Union (Affinity FCU) had dropped the rate on its 14-month Promotional CD Special from a competitive 5.50% APY to a rather pedestrian 5.00% APY overnight. Yet another example of a trend that has started in the last two months: falling CD rates and CD specials that don’t last long. Affinity FCU also cut the 8-month Promotional CD Special rate from 5.50% APY to 5.25% APY. While the 8-month APY is now slightly more than the 14-month APY, neither is anything to be excited about. I decided to still publish this review even though the new rates are disappointing. Hopefully, this post will be still helpful for those who have reason to join Affinity FCU.
The minimum opening deposit for either Promotional CD Special is $50k of new money, with no stated balance cap. According to CSR, “new money” includes funds that have been on deposit for 30 days or less at Affinity FCU, but cannot be from a recurring direct deposit or recurring payroll deposit.
Early Withdrawal Penalty
As stated on the Truth-in-Savings disclosure, the Early Withdrawal Penalty (EWP) reads as follows:
The penalty will equal ninety days' dividends on your certificate account with a term of one year or less, and a penalty of up to 182 days’ dividends for certificates with a term of more than one year. The penalty is calculated as a forfeiture of part of the dividends that have been or would have been earned on the account. It applies whether or not the dividends have been earned. In other words, if the account has not yet earned enough dividends or if the dividend has already been paid, the penalty will be deducted from the principal.
The “up to 182 days’ dividends” bothered me, as “up to” implies there is an EWP that could be less than 182 days for a certificate term of more than one year. CSR struggled to provide an explanation and the CSR Supervisor wasn’t able to clarify what “up to 182 days’ dividends” actually means, other than the EWP will never be more than 182 days’ dividends.
