Availability

Headquartered in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Service Credit Union’s field of membership (FOM) is diverse, and as the name suggests, a military service relationship plays a large role. The parameters of the military service requirements have been expanded to a point that the FOM could almost be described as including an easy membership requirement.

Military Relationship: Anyone who ever served, or is currently serving in the U.S. Military or Department of Defense, whether enlisted or civilian, is eligible to join.

Family Relationship: Family members of individuals who are serving, or have served, in any branch of the U.S. Military or Department of Defense. The last line on the online application reads,

I am a family member of someone who is serving or served in one of the following US military branches or DOD: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Army National Guard, Coast Guard, Air National Guard, and Civilian employee of DOD.

DA reader, Carpline, was able to join based on his father’s service during WWII. Carpline stated that Service CU only required his father’s name, last known address, and the branch of the military in which he served. Nearly everyone has a relative with current or past military service, hence the “almost” easy membership requirement.

Other ways to join include,

Residency: Individuals who live or work in New Hampshire, or in the Massachusetts towns of Bourne, Falmouth, Mashpee, and Sandwich are eligible to join.

Affiliation: Members and employees of seven trade organizations are also eligible.

A complete description of Service CU’s membership eligibility is available on the first page of the online application.

Joining Service Credit Union and/or opening a Special Rate Share Certificate Special can be done online, by phone, or by visiting any of 36 New Hampshire branches located in Amherst, Bedford, Berlin, Concord, Derry, Durham, Epping, Exeter, Franklin, Gorham, Hampton, Hinsdale, Hudson, Keene (2), Lancaster, Lebanon (2), Manchester, Nashua, Newington (3), Plymouth, Portsmouth (4), Rochester (2), Salem (2), Seabrook, Somersworth (2), and Tilton. There is also a single Massachusetts branch in Falmouth. Service CU also has military branches located in Great Forks, North Dakota and Portsmouth, New Hampshire, along with 14 military branches in Germany.

Hahaha, chatted with them, wouldn't answer when funds had to be available to deposit, wouldn't answer if they have wire or ACH fees, I disconnected. Then I called. Didn't know when funds had to be available, $20 incoming wire fee, $10 for all ACH transfers. Needless to say, they are OUT!

That $10 ACH fee is almost certainly for any ACH transaction, either in or out, initiated at Service Credit Union. The way around the fee is to have one or more external "hub" accounts, all of which provide excellent and free ACH services.

With ACH, point of initiation of the transfer means everything.  But a great many customer service reps are unaware of this.  Unlike most visitors to Ken's website, the average customer service representative uses ACH very, very little.

I have been a member of Service CU for many years. At this time I only have a $5+ amount in their savings as a holding. So not so sure I'm interested in 27-mo 3.25%. I don't know about $20 wire fee, but I'm almost sure that there is no $10 Incoming ACH transfer fee.

I wouldn't count them out if you are interested in the CD offer. Never had any problems with them in all those old years. And I certainly would use them if GOOD OFFER occurred.

Seems a pretty harsh EWP for a 27-month term.

refresh my memory, why are rate chasers getting down on this deal?

Yes. I like Freddy Troll would like to know why this rate is being disparaged. Why make a general displeasure comment without specifics? Does the EWP really make the deal unacceptable rate chaser 111? If so, then say so. Why does ACH costs make or break a deal that is superior to any other deal when you do the math? I am sensitive to fees and costs, but i do not let the tail wag the dog. Run the numbers with the costs to decide how good a rate deal is. I do not care what the ach or wire costs are if my return vs. other deals is better. Finally, I do take in service and I can tell you that SCU has excellent service. i took a boat load of money out of SCu to take adavntage of the NASA CD deal and SCU was as helpful as possible even though they were losing deposited money.

Your think I was being unfair? This 27-month CD has a 365-day EWP. Look at the 2 other deals that Ken compared this one with - first of all, all 3 are within 10 basis points of each other (a range of only about 3%). Secondly, BOTH of those other deals have an EWP that is only 180 days, HALF that of this "Service Credit Union". Sorry, but that's a big difference. Obviously, an EWP twice that of a similar CD lowers one's flexibility if rates turn funky. Didn't think I had to explain that to an experienced audience. Case closed - next case please.

Also - you say "rate-chaser" like its a BAD thing... LOL

What I DO regret is not jumping on the Garden Savings 4%, 5-year CD with a 180-day EWP from a few weeks ago!

Rate chaser 111, my comments were not intended as an attack. If you reread my post I never said you were being unfair. I said you made a general comment without specifics. And your some what explanatory response completely supports what I said. Also, everyone on this site is not an experienced audience. I have recommended this site over the years to countless novices who had no clue that a site like depossitaccounts.com existed. I have also fielded calls from people asking me to decipher general comments such as yours. You obviously have the knowledge to give specifics and I would urge you to do so. Finally, I am more than proud to be a rate chaser and certainly do not view it as a bad thing at all!!

Did anyone find the links sent to your personal email a little strange? There is a secure method for checking on your application status, sending documents and sending/receiving messages but yet they send links to sites for entering passwords via unsecured personal email. I've sent a request for verification of this procedure, we'll see what happens. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
