United Bay Community CU (MI) Adds 37-Month CD Special, 3.40% APY
As part of its 70th anniversary celebration, United Bay Community Credit Union (UBCCU) is offering a 37-month CD Special with two rates: 3.40% APY with a minimum of $10k of new money, or 2.70% APY with a minimum of $10k of current deposits.
According to the landing page, this is a limited-time offer “ending on or before April 30, 2019.” CSR stated it’s quite likely the CD Special will not last until April 30. UBCCU has set a dollar amount target and is quickly approaching its goal. CSR mentioned there was also a 57-month CD Special that met its funds goal in a matter of days. In other words, time is of the essence.
According to CSR, the Early Withdrawal Penalty is 270 days of interest on the amount withdrawn. Partial withdrawals are permitted, as long as the $10k minimum is maintained.

While all credit unions adhere to the “people helping people” philosophy, UBCCU’s predecessor, the Chevrolet Employees Federal Credit Union, was established to help people immediately. In 1949, Bay City Chevrolet plant employees returned to work after a 110-day strike. After months of not being able to meet their financial obligations,
many employees were on the brink of losing their jobs due to their wages being garnished by creditors. People were in need of help and concerned co-workers knew something had to be done. Workers agreed to chip in $5 to lend to those co-workers in need. The $5 contribution still represents one share in the credit union today.
UBCCU has changed charter type once, re-branded twice, and expanded its FOM three times, the last of which was in 2012, following the acquisition of Access First Federal Credit Union in southwest Michigan.
