Competitive 1-Year CD Rates at Beal Bank in Miami, Phoenix & Other Cities

POSTED ON BY

Beal Bank is again offering some competitive 1-year CD rates. However, the best rates are only in a few cities where it has branches, and they are different cities than when I last reported on Beal Bank in August. You can check what rates are available in your area by entering your zip code in Beal Bank's rates page. I did this for zip codes of most of the cities where Beal Bank has branches.

The best 12-month CD deal has a 1.11% APY and is available in Southeast Florida in the Miami metro area. I wasn't able to find any other location with this rate. The next best is 1.06% APY that I found in four cities. I also found several cities with a 1.01% APY. Other cities had much lower rates which ranged from 0.51% to 0.91%. These rates were listed at Beal Bank as of 12/12/2012. Minimum deposit is $1,000. Below is a list of all the cities which had 12-month CD rates over 1.00%:

Rates as of 12/12/2012:

1.11% APY 1-year CD:

  • Miami, FL
  • Boca Raton, FL

1.06% APY 1-year CD:

  • Denver, CO
  • Philadelphia, PA
  • Phoenix, AZ
  • Seattle, WA

1.01% APY 1-year CD:

  • Birmingham, AL
  • Las Vegas, NV
  • Orlando, FL
  • Pittsburgh, PA
  • San Diego, CA
  • St. Louis, MO

Beal Bank is also the owner of UmbrellaBank.com. This internet bank used to be owned by New South Federal Savings Bank in Alabama, but in December 2009, New South Federal Savings Bank failed and the FDIC arranged for Beal Bank to acquire New South Federal. Beal Bank wasn't kind to UmbrellaBank CD holders (see post). UmbrellaBank continues to offer subpar CD rates.

Beal Bank is actually two banks with separate FDIC charters: Beal Bank (FDIC Cert. # 32574) and Beal Bank USA (FDIC Cert. # 57833). If you click on the "view all locations" link at the Beal Bank locations page, you can see the branch offices that belong to the two banks.

Beal Bank has an overall health score at DepositAccounts.com of 3 stars (out of 5) with a Texas ratio of 53.04% (below average). Beal Bank USA has a health score of 4 stars with a Texas ratio 25.93% (average). These numbers are based on September 2012 data. Please refer to our financial overview of Beal Bank and financial overview of Beal Bank USA for more details.

How These CD Rates Compare

The two best short-term CD deals are currently at two all-access credit unions. Digital Federal Credit Union is still offering a special 1.50% APY 8-month CD, and Chartway Federal Credit Union is offering a special 1.26% APY 1-year CD (1.51% with a premium level checking relationship).

The highest 1-year CD rate at an internet bank is 1.06% APY at AloStar Bank of Commerce (just fell from 1.11%).

These rates are accurate as of 12/12/2012.

It's ironic that Beal Bank is based in Dallas, TX but neither the city nor its nearby suburbs are included in these (higher) rate offerings.

Maybe their goal is to build their presence in these other cities.  Still, you'd think they'd want to "dance with the one who brought you".

UmbrellaBank and Imperial Capital CD Holders Take a Beating
As I reported on December 18th, two banks that offered internet CDs failed: New South Federal Savings Bank (parent of UmbrellaBank) and Imperial Capital Bank. Beal Bank assumed the deposits of New South Federal and City National Bank assumed Imperial Capital deposits. Unfortunately, neither Beal nor City National agreed to honor existing CD rates to maturity. Depositors are free to make a penalty-free early withdrawal. Several readers who had CDs with these failed banks have reported on the new rates. They're not pretty.

Beal Bank is reseting UmbrellaBank 1-year CDs to...
