3.65% 24-Month CD & 3.25% 12-Month CD at Air Force FCU

Air Force FCU is offering several competitive certificate rates. The most competitive include 3% APY for 6 months, 3.25% APY for 12 months, 3.65% APY for 24 months and 3.90% APY for 36 months. Minimum deposit is $25,000. Slightly higher rates are available for a $100,000 minimum. CDs can also be opened for smaller deposits with slightly lower rates. These rates are listed in the credit union's certificate account rate table as of 1/29/09. Slightly higher rates are listed in the IRA Share Certificates rate table as of 1/29/09.

My last post on this credit union was in August 2008 when it was offering a 4.50% 13-month add-on CD. That add-on feature is proving to be very useful. The credit union had maintained competitive CD rates for 2007 and the first half of 2008, but the CD rates were low for the second half of 2008. It appears that the rate environment has caught up to them, and now their rates are competitive again. We'll see if this continues next month.

Membership is open to all US Armed Forces (either active or retired). There are also a few other select employer groups, but unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any easy way to join for those without any military affiliation. Please refer to the Air Force FCU eligibility page for the full details. Membership requires a minimum balance of $5 in the savings account. The membership application is available online. It must be printed and mailed.

Branches are located in San Antonio, Texas. Accounts can be opened online so branch visits are not required.

The credit union has some decent ratings for soundness: 5 stars (superior) at BauerFinancial and 3 stars (performing) at Bankrate.com. Both ratings are based on 9/30/08 financial data. The credit union is federally insured by the NCUA (Charter # 8169).
