Banking in the Greenwood Area
Greenwood is a small city in northwest Mississippi, about 90 miles north of Jackson, Mississippi, and about 130 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee. Greenwood has a population of about 16,000 people, although the wider Greenwood region, including the cities of Grenada, Greenwood, Cleveland, Indianola, Leland, Charleston, Itta Bena, Moorhead and Benoit, has nearly 50,000 people. Greenwood is best known as the site of several major protests and conflicts during the civil rights movement in the 1960s.
Because of its small size, Greenwood does not have a large banking industry. There are six banks and four credit unions that have their headquarters in the Greenwood area. Notable institutions with their base in Greenwood or the surrounding area include State Bank & Trust Company, Planters Bank & Trust Company, Bank of Commerce, The Cleveland State Bank and Tallahatchie County Bank. State Bank & Trust Company is the oldest bank still operating with its headquarters in Greenwood, having been established there in 1898. Overall, Greenwood and its surrounding cities have about 100 branches from 21 banks and nine credit unions.
