Banking in the Des Moines Area
Des Moines is both the capital city and largest city in Iowa. Des Moines has a large metro area, with the city itself only making up about one-third of the entire metropolitan area. Other surrounding cities include West Des Moines, Ankeny, and Clive. Because of its size and location, Des Moines has become a major financial center, mostly for insurance, but also for banking.
Des Moines is the home city for a whopping 108 banks and 37 credit unions. What is interesting, though, is that nearly all those banks are small. Notable institutions with headquarters in the Des Moines area include Bankers Trust Company, Principal Bank, West Des Moines State Bank, Bank Iowa, and First American Bank. Hardin Bank has been around since 1868, making it the oldest Des Moines bank that's still operating.
