Banking in the Tucson Area

Tucson is a city in southern Arizona, only about 60 miles north of the Mexican border. Tucson has a population of about 525,000 people, making it the second-largest city in Arizona after Phoenix. Its wider metropolitan area is home to nearly one million people. Notable cities in the region include Green Valley, Nogales, Oro Valley, Sierra Vista, Benson, Bisbee, Douglas, Marana, and Willcox.

Tucson is home to the University of Arizona, and education is one of the city's top industries. Government, technology, and healthcare are other major employers in town. For its size and relative isolation from other large cities, Tucson has a very small banking industry. There are only four banks and nine credit unions with headquarters in Tucson or the surrounding area. Notable institutions based in the area include National Bank of Arizona, Vantage West Credit Union, Hughes Federal Credit Union, Pima Federal Credit Union, and Tucson Federal Credit Union.

The oldest institution still operating in the area is Pyramid Federal Credit Union, which was established in 1929. Despite the lack of locally based banks and credit unions, there are a significant amount of institutions with operations in Tucson. Altogether, there are more than 25 banks and 15 credit unions with approximately 340 branches.
