Evansville is the commercial hub of not only southwest Indiana, but also the tri-state area of Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky. Evansville has about 117,000 people, making it the largest city in southern Indiana and the third largest in the state. However, the surrounding area, including the cities of Owensboro, Henderson, Madisonville, Newburgh, Jasper, Princeton, Greenville, Boonville and Central City, pushes the Evansville metro population to more than 350,000.
Because of its size and location, Evansville is a major banking center. There are 38 banks and 24 credit unions that have their headquarters in the region. Some of the notable names include Old National Bank, German American Bancorp, Independence Bank of Kentucky, First Security Bank and Heritage Federal Credit Union. The oldest bank still operating in the Evansville area is Hancock Bank & Trust Company, which was established in 1888. In addition to the banks headquartered in the Evansville area, there also are many other banks with branches in the area.
