Banking in the Gainesville Area

Gainesville is a city in the central part of Florida. It is home to the University of Florida, which is one of the 10 largest universities in the U.S. Gainesville has a city population of about 127,000 people, with a metro population of about 335,000. Other notable cities in the Gainesville region include Alachua, Newberry, High Springs, Chiefland, Cross City, Trenton, Bronson, Hawthorne and Williston.

Because Gainesville's economy is largely dependent on the university and a major hospital system in the city, it has a very small banking industry for a city its size. There are only three banks and six credit unions with their headquarters in the Gainesville area. Notable institutions that have their headquarters in Gainesville or the surrounding area include CAMPUS USA Credit Union, Florida Credit Union, Merchants & Southern Bank, Drummond Community Bank and Sunstate Federal Credit Union. The oldest institution headquartered in Gainesville that is still operating is CAMPUS USA Credit Union, which was established in 1935. Overall, there are more than 20 banks and eight credit unions operating in the Gainesville region, with a total of about 120 branches.
