Banking in the Greenville Area

Greenville is the sixth-largest city in South Carolina, with about 62,000 people in the city proper. However, Greenville has a huge surrounding area that spreads over several counties in both South Carolina and North Carolina. The total population of that area is over 850,000 people and includes the cities of Asheville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Hendersonville, Greer, Simpsonville, Easley, Greenwood and Seneca.

Because of its large metro area, Greenville has a much larger banking industry than you might expect from a city of only 62,000. There are nearly 40 banks and 45 credit unions that have their headquarters in the Greenville region. Notable institutions headquartered in and around Greenville include the Palmetto Bank, HomeTrust Bank, Southern First, Entegra Bank and CertusBank, National Association. The oldest bank headquartered in the area that is still operating today is First Bank, which was established in 1895. A number of national and regional banks, including Bank of America and TD Bank, N.A., also have operations in the Greenville area. Overall, there are approximately 990 branches from more than 75 banks and 65 credit unions in the region.
