Banking in the Nashville Area

Nashville is the second-largest city in Tennessee behind Memphis, with a population of about 660,000. However, it has a large surrounding area, with a metropolitan population of about 1.8 million - the largest in the state. Notable cities in the Nashville area include Franklin, Murfreesboro, Clarksville, Brentwood, Cookeville, Hendersonville, Gallatin, Lebanon, and Mount Juliet.

Though Nashville is known as the home of the Grand Ole Opry and an important city in the country music scene, it actually has a very diversified economy, one in which banking plays a significant role.

There are 86 banks and 48 credit unions with headquarters in the Nashville area. Notable institutions with their headquarters in Nashville or surrounding cities include Pinnacle Bank of Tennessee, FirstBank, Franklin Synergy Bank, Wilson Bank and Trust, and Ascend Federal Credit Union. The oldest institution with headquarters in the area that is still operating today is Elkton Bank & Trust Company, which was established in 1866. In total, including banks headquartered elsewhere that operate in and around the city, Nashville has approximately 139 banks and 60 credit unions with a total of more than 1,140 branches.
